Optics Specialist

Location:        Waterloo, Ontario

Experience:   3+ years relevant work experience

Education:     University degree in engineering, physics, photonics, or another applicable field.

 About the Position

The chosen candidate will become a key member of the development team at P&P Optica. The team is responsible for a wide range of activities including the design and production of our world-class holographic gel gratings, spectrometers, and Smart Imaging Systems. In this position, you will be responsible for the optical design aspects of our products and systems including developing and proving your own new innovative designs. You will also work closely with operations to ensure that products are assembled and tested to a high standard of quality.

Primary Responsibilities 
  • Providing optics expertise for the development of next generation Smart Imaging products, systems, and accessories
  • Managing spectrometer products and components including their design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing
  • Innovating, prototyping, and finalizing detailed designs that meet technical, schedule, cost, and other critical requirements
  • Identifying and developing new technologies that support the continued evolution of our products and capabilities
  • Analyzing, documenting, and presenting experimental results to the rest of the team
  • Recommending measures to improve testing procedures, use of equipment, and needs for new equipment
  • Producing professional grade documentation to support the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of our products and systems
  • Participating in production and quality control of the Company’s spectrometer systems
  • Operating, maintaining, and aligning high precision optical equipment
  • Trouble-shooting of optical, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Sourcing reliable components that balance cost, performance, and schedule demands
Additional Tasks May Include
  • Overseeing health and safety procedures / programs related to optics and laser systems
  • Supporting production with the assembly and testing of systems
  • Working with external suppliers and fabrication shops to ensure that design and quality standards are met
  • Developing project schedules including scope of work, duration of tasks, and order of execution
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Some tasks may require lifting up to 30kg

Required Skills
  •  3+ years of hands-on experience designing and working with optical systems
  • Strong aptitude for experimental design and data analysis
  • Able to leverage analytics software to automate analyses (eg. Python, Labview, Matlab)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with technical documentation experience
  • Able to work effectively as part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team
Bonus Skills
  • Food industry experience is a significant asset
  • Able to use Solidworks CAD and PDM software
  • Comfortable with the Python programming language
  • Proficient in Zemax optical design software
  • Image processing experience
